I just recently got a Canon A-710 and appropriate underwater housing for the camera. Can`t wait to try it out on a dive, but I am SO nervous about it. Any advice you could provide me with ?

Contact Canon and purchase an extra O ring

Learn to use the manual hue settings. See my blog in educational section

If this is a new on the market piece of equipment, purchase product/equipment insurance for your camera and housing. Older gear isn`t worth the insurance since you can pick up replacements on Ebay for next to nothing.

Learn the maintenance. Removal, cleaning, and reinstalling the O ring is a life or death scenario for a camera. It only takes a single hair to cause a leak. So, it is absolutely important that the O ring be removed from the housing and cleaned when the camera is removed. DO NOT relube the O ring or replace it in the housing until you are ready to use the housing again.

Dry-absorb packets you find with factory packaged electronics are a wonderous thing to have in your housing. If you get just a tiny bit of moisture inside (usually causes fogging inside), one of these should take care of the problem.

Share your shots when you can.

Splashdown divers has a great section on their website about digital photography. The author gives alot of great tips for taking pictures, saving them to your computer and editing. Check it out, it`s well worth it. www.splashdowndivers.com

Good tip! I completely forgot about Splashdown divers. I was directed there by a member from scubaboard. A combination of resources is great, but you still have the trial and error on what works for you and your personal gear.

Don`t get depressed if the photo`s don`t come out as you expect in the beginning. Underwater photography is tricky. Try out taking pictures of objects that don`t move. This will allow you to build up some experience of what your camera can or can`t do.

be sure to buy dive equipment insurance. I think DAN & Dive Assure have equipment insurance.

make your first dive with the housing only to make sure it doesn`t leak. you may miss a good pic but its better than ruining your camera.

Hi, Welcome to undrewater photography, you will not regret it, its fantastic. I have been hiring camera`s for the past year, and now i have my own, a canon A640 with a DC-8 housing. Please take the housing down with you to test it,first, as i had a leak on my first dive, not knowing how much silicone grease to put on the "o" ring and luckly having the small silicone packets inside it i saved my camera.Enjoy......

Practice Practice Practice - along with a lot of Patience Patience Patience. After each dive - download the pictures and analyze what you think would improve the photo and then try to accomplish just that on the next dive. Also I worked on running all of the controls on my camera blind so that under the water I would not be fumbling trying to read the settings. Periodically we would accidentally change the settings on our camera during the dive. Make not of the colors as you shoot to make sure that you haven`t doen the same.
