Just a public safety notice for my salt buddies.

Kidde has a safety recall on their fire extinguishers. I’ve found three recalled extinguishers this week doing boat safety inspections. If you have a Kidde fire extinguisher on your boat (or in your home or RV, for that matter) you can call Kidde at 855-271-0773 and give them the serial # printed on the label or on the side of the cylinder. If yours is one of the recalled ones they’ll send you a new one free.

I received mine in about 10 days via UPS.

I saw this awhile back, the model # was used in my RV but my serial number was okay.

I think this model would be too small on a boat where if you don’t put the fire out you can step away and wait for the FD.

When I took the boat safety course they had us bring our extinguishers for a live demo because most would need charging anyway.

Some would almost put the fire out, some from the vibration had all of the baking soda packed hard in the bottom and did nothing :( The following week they asked who had bought a BIGGER or additional fire extinguisher and I think every ones hand went up.

You’re probably right unless it’s a small boat. Fiberglass boats go up in just a few seconds. The gelcoat burns. A little B1 that most people carry is just their to satisfy the USCG requirements and put out cigarette butts. :)

I don’t teach this, but I suspect basically most any fire on a smaller boat is gonna be engine or fuel line or gas tank or any combo, so screw trying to fight it, get off the boat.

I know one guy who insisted on using using ethanol fuel. It hardened his fuel line and the fuel line cracked, spraying gasoline on the manifold. He basically had a gasoline fueled engine fire. His reason for trying to stay and fight it was, "Dude this is a $50,000 boat!" and my thinking is on that is, "yeah, but it’s just a boat."

Let it burn and live to dive another day.

Update, I got an email from Kidde; "The website is incorrect, it has told a lot of people their extinguishers were not included but in fact were"!

You might want to re-visit the site with your fire extinguisher info!
