I heard this morning that an open water diving student died this weekend in San Carlos, Mexico. He was diving off the Ocean Spirit, and apparently failed to inflate his BCD after a dive, panicked & drowned. That`s all I know so far.

Thats horrible news. Sereves as a reminder to us all to always be safe & never take anything for granted no matter how many times we have dove.

It sounds like the person had very little experience but not enough imfo to for a clear answer. Was this person with a group or just with a partner and water condition? How was this person trained. Advit diver or twice a year diver?

He wasn`t certified yet! He was doing his open water certification dives when this happened! The conditions were calm, over 40` vis. He was with an instructor, somehow got seperated, came to the surface & called for help, but didn`t inflate his BCD. Before the boat crew could get to him, he sank to the bottom. He was found, reg out, unconscious, not breathing, was brought back to the boat, but resuscitation efforts failed. He drowned!

The gauge is leading toward the instructor, not enough control. I wonder what the student/instructor ratio was and experience level of the instructor?

It`s TOTALLY the instructors fault!!! ...PERIOD!!! There were visible indications that this diver was more than a little nervous about doing that dive, in fact, the boat crew said he lokked TERRIFIED, but the instructor took him down anyway! And how he got away from the instructor during that dive is unforgivable!

WOW! How sad! I think this is poor, poor planning. When I did my Open Water Certificiation in Durban, South Africa from PADI it was only me and my girlfriend. When we did our 4 open water dives we were well escorted. We had our instructor, we also had a Master Diver training to be an instructor, and another rescue certified diver. All I know is that our instructor never left our sight.
