The Proselyte was a Dutch 18th century battleship that sank November 7th 1801, when it hit one of the reefs just outside Great Bay in Philipsburg, St. Maarten.
Proselyte is now one of the most popular dive sites on the island, because the scattered remains of the Proselyte, (including: numerous cannons, ballast bars, barrel hoops and last but not least the big anchors) are now heavily encrusted with coral formations.
This is not only an attraction for divers, but also for a wide variety of aquatic life. During a dive on Proselyte we can encounter: various schools of fish, turtle, barracuda, angelfish, stingray, eagle ray, trumpet fish, dolphin fish, porcupine fish, reef shark, nurse shark, octopus, spiny lobster, etc.
