Lent to the United States Navy in February 1942. HMT St. Cathan (Lt. John Mackay, RNR) was sunk in a collision with the Dutch merchant Hebe (1.140 tons) south-south-east of Little River during blackout conditions. , South Carolina, U.S.A. in position 33.09’N, 78.16’W. The Hebe sunk a few miles away.

All from Hebe survived, but 30 from the crew of 39 of Cathan went down
