Dive the Coast, a first-of-its-kind event, is scheduled to take place in June 2013. It involves organizing thousands of scuba divers to travel the entire coastline underwater, raising money for conservation organizations along the way.

Dive the Coast originated in Santa Cruz in August 2011, and organizers around the state are now planning test dives, reaching out to the dive community, and partnering with non-profits that will benefit from their fund-raising efforts. Here in Santa Cruz, Save Our Shores will benefit from any funds we raise by getting people or organizations to sponsor every mile we cover.

On Oct. 15, 2011, divers from five California counties held a kick-off event in Monterey to calibrate dive distance, depth and tank time. More test dives will be held in the coming months, including "Dive the Bay" in June, when we’ll cover the entire Monterey Bay.

The goal of Dive the Coast is to do something that’s never been done before, bring divers together for a common purpose, and to raise money for conservation organizations. But it will also provide an opportunity for divers to explore areas of the state where they would otherwise not go, and gives exposure to the sport as a whole.
