I’m seeking local friends who, in addition to SCUBA & snorkling, share my interest in animals, comedy, punk rock, and creative collaborations on artistic projects.

As an animal lover with concern for the eco-system, I can’t condone taking wild animals out of their environment. So I won’t take part in any activities which involve fishing or hunting, causing the death of lobsters, etc.

For many years, I shot underwater videos using housings for videoTAPE camcorders. They were heavy, comparatively large (in hindsight), clunky, and made traveling difficult. But I got a lot of great use out of both large, water-proof enclosures. I used them up until about 2011.

But in this convenient age of the more economical GoPro, both monstrosities are out of date. Does anybody buy such obsolete equipment? Do they salvage parts (the screws can be used for putting up shelves!)? Or should I toss them both, along with the non-functional oldschool camcorders into a recycling bin?

Have any of you dived Hawaii’s big island? I’ll be there next month for Christmas. Looking forward to snorkeling, free-diving, swimming and of course SCUBA diving. Looking forward to a scheduled boat-dive, with Manta Rays. My main interest is exotic animal encounters. If any of you have stayed in the Kona (Kailua) vicinity and can recommend any exotic adventures, let me know.

I’ve been asked about how to help Sea Shepherd on their campaigns. Traveling to foreign countries (thwarting poachers, monitoring eco-systems, protecting endangered species, etc.) is incredibly expensive. Unlike "traditional" law enforcement (be it publicly funded or a private business), the only financial backers are concerned individuals. Obviously, endangered species can’t write checks! I hate to beg on the behalf of Sea Shepherd or anybody else, but they accept donations at $5.00 or less:

Protecting our oceanic environment is something all us SCUBA divers should partake in. Otherwise, we’ll just be taking photos of rocks, instead of pretty-colored fish. So as I see it, the donations benefit all of us.
