Travel to Thailand

We are heading to Thailand in early April - we are planning to go diving while in Phuket. I’d love to get some feedback as what I can expect from rental equipment.

While filling out paperwork prior to our trip, I noticed that sizing was different from what I am used to. I am guessing I’ll be using metric (I am from the US) for weights. Probably same for tank pressure and depth. We decided to take our own regs for this reason.

If you’ve been diving outside of the US (Caribbean and Mexico don’t count), do you have any tips? I am looking forward to diving in Phuket, but could also use some packing tips. Our self imposed weight restrictions to save on baggage charges is limiting me to 15kg of check baggage. Though I have always been good about packing only what I need, this is by far going to be the most severe!

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I just got back from diving in the Gulf Of Thailand off the Island of Koh Tao. They used metric on weights and BAR instead of PSI so I brought my own 1rst and 2cnd stage and my dive computer. Everything else was the same. S,M,L,XL BCDs and they had nice equipment otherwise. Any other questions feel free to email me I also have a bunch of pics with my SCUBA camera I can share.

Suzi,

I have been to Phuket many times diving (at least 20), No problem w/ gear as long as you use a reputable shop. If you want some suggestions, or some contacts, let me know.

We seem to have things squared away as far as diving and accommodation are concerned. We are staying in Kata Beach and going with a dive operation locally. My husband took care of the arrangements with the dive operator - four days of three tanks dives. We were reluctant to do a liveaboard this trip, but maybe next time.

We are taking only our regulators, very reluctantly leaving behind the rest of our gear. I am trying hard to pack light, as the extra weight means we pay more. Everything adds up.

Thanks for your suggestions.
