Hi All. I am extermely new too Scuba Diving and Diving photography. I have a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W120 digital camera which is not water proof. Inorder to make it water proof I would need to buy the Ikelite 6210.12 Underwater Camera Housing / Waterproof Marine Case and it is quite expensive. Needed to know if anyone has used this for their digital camera and dived a maximum 30 feet. There are also water proof covers available which is rated for a depth of 20 -30 feet. Would need your feedback for both the devices ?

My $.02 is don’t spend the money on a waterproof pouch that can only go to 30 feet. You will go deeper than that. It’s inevitable in this sport. You can’t go wrong with and Ikelite housing. Just make sure this is the camera you want for underwater photography. Your housing will probably not work for your next camera. Does it have an underwater mode? Does it have short or no shutter lag so you don’t miss the shot of the sealion swimming by? Is you camera at least 5-7 megapixel to get decent resolution? If not, you may consider buying another camera with their own house, such as Canon or Olympus. You can probably get a whole camera with housing for a similar cost to the Ikelite housing you are considering. My canon camera cost around $200 and the canon underwater housing cost an additional $140. Hope this helps.

I’d have to say that I wouldn’t even consider a housing that wasn’t rated for 130’

I started out with a 6MP camera from Intova. It worked pretty decent to start out, I then went and got the Intova 8MP that now has an adjustable shutter speed. They take pretty decent pictures and the housings come with the camera. Housings are rated for I think 180. I recently got a sony HD camcorder and Ikelite housing that is a blast to use since it has a 30GB harddrive.

I have a Intova IC600 the case is rated to 180FWS which is well within the range I dive. I agree with Scuba Rich if your gonna dive and shoot get a camera and case that will go well beyond what you think your gonna dive. Dont waste the cash and then go for somthing better. The intova is a good camera to start off with, I spent 250 for the hole works camera, case, red lens, strobe, fiberoptic cable. If you view my vids all where shot with the camera, in about water from 25fsw to 100 fws, if its a shaws cove vid its around 35 to 40 fsw. I do recommend you spend the money and get rechargeable battries as to the fact when you shot video it eats battries, I use Polaroid, spent 20 bucks for battries, charger, and extra sets for camera and strobe.

hope the info helps
