I am headed out to San Antonio and New Braunfels next week. I have heard about diving the comal/guadalupe rivers as well as canyon lake. Has anyone been there to dive? Are there any other dive sites in the area? Any info would be appreciated.

I have dove Canyon Lake and the Comal river. Honestly...I didn’t care for Canyon lake so much, viz was bad. The Comal river is really cool (literally). You enter along that area where the tubers enter (concrete bulkhead with steps). Start as far upstream as you can because the river current will bring you towards the tube chute. Don’t get too close to the mouth of tube chute...I’ve heard of divers getting sucked into it for a wild ride down the chute (that could damage your gear).

You’ll see bass, crawfish (if you’re lucky) and plenty of rocks and plant life. It only gets about 10 - 12 feet deep, but it’s very clear. The current makes it like a drift dive. Have fun!

There is also Aquarina Springs in San Marcos, but you need to take a day long Scientific Diver course with them before you can dive there. It’s VERY clear with lots of plant life and fish, some even native to that area only. Glass bottom boat rids float over top of you while you dive and kids like to wave at you.

I recently spent 10.5 hours underwater at aquarena springs working on a movie. It was pretty nice. I want to do the Comal river thing but haven’t had a chance yet.

The comal sounds great, I wonder also about collisions with all the tubers....is there another area that may have fewer party goers floating overhead?? Also, I dont have any experience with currents yet...I am guessing this would be a good place to start since I wont really risk getting lost. I may end up down river too far but I guess I will find a bbq stand and a phone along the way..lol.
