Regulators, dry air

Hey Divebuddies,

I am a new diver and would like to purchase a reg.
Have used aqualung and scubapro, prefer the latter.
Don’t plan on cold water dives and I am not looking for the cheapest.
We will be getting nitrox certified before our next trip
Have found that my son and I have had issues coughing, maybe due to dry air.

Looking for recommendations and any insight into the cough/heartburn feeeling after dives which I believe may be associated with dry air.

Any info would be appreciated, we have been renting up till now however we will be diving on vacations out of country and would prefer to have our own regs.

Thanks in advance for any insight

I have seen divers tuck a cough drop into their cheek but keep in mine that could be a chocking issue.

Try flooding ur reg once in awhile and see if that helps. Oceanic omega and poseidins both breath wet....or at least mine do YMMV

The air in the cylinders are dry for a reason- to prevent corrosion of the cylinder. I would go with making sure you are properly hydrated. There are regs that have "fins" inside to capture moisture & return it on the inhale (Sherwood Oasis),... but not IMO the best breathing reg on the market. If the dryness gets to be too much for me, I start gagging, I will just remove the reg,... take in a little water, swish it around & spit it back out.

Hydrate Hydrate hydrate IMHO
Drink even if you aren’t thirsty. Fruits are best as they tend to help you metabolize the water. if you aren’t peeing in your wetsuit you’re not drinking enough. Besides its one of the top five for avoiding DCS. And as stated above a sip of seawater won’t hurt.
Those breakfast sausages and bacon look good on the buffet but scrambled eggs fruit or cereal well before dive time is a better bet. ou may find it all improves as you gain experience
amd breath easier.

If none of that works, you could try the Apollo bio filter. It is a filter and humidifier system that screws inline with your regulator hose to filter out particles and add some moisture to your breathing gas as it goes from the first stage to the second stage.
