Best place to dive in Florida (besides the Keys)

I’m thinking of moving to Florida. I’d like to be near some good diving areas (besides the Keys). Where should I focus my house/condo hunting? I don’t want to have to drive several hours to go diving.

Thanks, this really helps! I’m looking for reef, wreck diving. Options on charters without having to spend several hours trying to get there. I’m retiring soon and going to start looking for that condo or house...

The Gainesville area offers all sorts of Spring diving with the Gulf a couple hrs away.

For ocean diving, Vero to Miami, where the Gulf Stream "hugs" the beach, drift diving most common.

Lauderdale by the Sea area has nice beach diving. Some do that from Sebastain Inlet south to Ft Pierce, but bugs rather than vis seems to be the motivator.

My personal preference of a home location for diving would be (if I was to relocate south) Indian River or St Lucie Counties, but we bought our home years before I started diving. Florida has so much more than just diving as far as year round outdoor activities.

My area (native to Brevard) allows for splitting the difference between the best ocean and spring / cave, that makes it 2-4 hours for each in opposite directions with very limited in immediate area, but my lower COL allows for a lot of short travel.

Hey there Maria,

Southeast Florida, generally the area around west Palm Beach, offers some of the best diving in the area. The majority are drift dives since the Gulf Stream rips by there. This makes for some easy dives on the numerous reefs in the area but can make wreck dives a bit more work. As previously mentioned, you might want to spend a week or two vacationing in the area, scouting out the neighborhoods.

Best of luck, Todd

i like Pompono Beach area, near Hillsboro Inlet. SFDH first dve a wreck, second drift on a reef. Never had excessive current like Key West.

Delray beach is a nice place to live and you can go in either direction. I was also looking around Pompano. I will be down there this winter and this month again checking it out myself. I would also like to have a condo or home in the area just not sure exactly where.....

Were bound to cross paths soon:)

Wow.... This really helps narrow the field for me.. Sounds like Pampano Beach area might be a good place to start.

I’d luv a house but dislike all the work attach to home ownership. I just don’t have the "fixit skills." Looking at condos. Besides, I just need enough space for me and my dive gear...❤️ Thanks everyone.
