Diving and Fishermen...

So I went out to Leo Carrillo this past Saturday with someone I met here on DiveBuddy and we tried to dive around the point near lifeguard tower 3. Although the visibility was terrible (maybe a couple feet) I noticed a few fishermen around the point with lines out in the water.

My concern was being hooked or tangled in line. I carry a small dive knife on my kit for tangles. That point is supposed to be some of the better diving in the area as I understand so it’s obviously of some interest to divers although the fisherman being there had me avoiding that side of the beach. Does anyone have any experience diving around fisherman? Is this a valid concern or do you think the chances of actually being hooked or tangled with just a couple lines in the water are slim enough to not worry about? I would hate to be on the hook and have them trying to reel me in! LOL!

Mixed bag, I’ve done jetties where I have walked along, asked how they were catching and told them I was going in, please do not cast on the bubbles and not had a problem. Once a fisherman was casting way out for flounder, I told him they were right by his feet but he didn’t believe me. When I entered I goosed two into my bag and handed them up to him, then all of the fishermen told me what they were looking for.

Been hooked twice, once on the zipper pull and I had to cut the line. Another time one got my glove. Both idiots were casting right toward my flag. I’m just glad neither hooked the BC bladder! Got tangled once on a fin and he kept trying to reel me in rather than let me untie it so I had to cut it before he set a hook into me.

When I find fishing equipment on the bottom I give it to the fishermen, one I don’t need it and two it might bring karma.

There are some spots I avoid like the Avon jetty on Shark River in NJ because there are just too many lines in the water

Sounds like fisherman really just want to catch anything at all. You should have grabbed onto a rock for support and started yanking on their line, make them think they have a huge fish :)
