Carrying your computer, gauges and regs is also important because they are pressurized and (I’ve heard) that not all cargo holds are.
As for checked baggage, I usually use an old, beat up suitcase. That way it doesn’t look like it contains valuables and I don’t care if it gets a little wet and smelly. Call your insurance company before you go - sometimes your home owners or renters insurance can help with lost or stolen gear. Or you can look into rental prices where you’re going. Sometimes it’s easier and cheaper to rent than schlep.
