Need advice regarding Cozumel trip

So my family will be in Cancun from March 30 through April 7. I have a one day window on Monday, April 2nd, to his Cozumel for a single day excursion. Before you all tell me I should scrap Cancun and just stay in Cozumel...I can’t due to child care availability and the rest of the family. So one day it is. I understand I can take a ferry from Play Del Carmen to Cozumel. From there I need a recommendation on which charter operation is the best to use, and what would be the "don’t miss" dive sites that I should hit with my one day trip? I also plan to dive a couple days at the Marine Reserve outside of Cancun which is very nice too. Thanks! If anyone will be in Cozumel that week please let me know and maybe we will join you for one day.

You will actually need to take a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and there catch a ferry. Close to the ferry/cruise terminal are Aldora Divers and Del Mar Aquatics. Some of most popular sites are Columbia Reef (toward most southern end) and Santa Rosa Wall, and Chankanaab would be a good shallow afternoon dive.

Enjoy that is true dive Paradise!

Marco is right about the Ferry. I enjoyed the southern reef and walls. The most popular one that we went to was Palancar. We even got shirts with that on it. However, my personal favorite is Delilah. Make arrangements ahead of time and they’ll pick you up from the Ferry.

There is also a flight from CUN to CZM but not much room on that plane for divegear let alone a carryon bag!

From where the bus drops you off to the ferry is a walk, if your dive bag doesn’t have wheels there are people there with cargo bikes who will move your stuff for a few bucks.

On Aldora you won’t get much say in where the boat is going, on a six pack your vote carries more weight :) May I suggest our own Chucho Divers http://www.divebuddy.com/profile.aspx?MemID=15112 or http://www.bluextseadiving.com/

Conditions permiting Chucho sometime does Tortugas reef off PDC, a fast drift dive over patch reef with tons of turtles, hense the name, fat morays and I saw one bull shark there which may or not be a good thing.

I have been told by my local dive shop (Who have not done me wrong yet) that there is a dive shop in Playa named Tank Ha that has a "Direct to Cozumel" option that takes you by fast boat over to Conzy, you can dive, and then brings you back to Playa. Supposedly it saves a lot of time as you bypass the ferry/transportation issues. Might be worth checking out. http://www.tankha.com/dive_cozumel.htm

Have fun,

Seems like I remember TankHa also only does this trip direct to Cozumel on Wednesdays. And only if the water permits it. I’m not real sure on this, but I do think it is the case. Also logistically, you need to be on the first ferry to Cozumel, like 7am, to make the morning dive trips there. Its a good 45 minute drive from Cancun to PDC. The bus would take you to bus station which is a few blocks from the ferry dock. There are also shuttles/taxi/vans that will take you to what ever location you want to go, such as condo or ferry.

My favorite dive company to use is Dive Palancar on the south end. But they will pick you up wherever you are usually. Have you tried just taking a ferry from Cancun over to Isla Mujeres for day diving? It will take alot of time and alot of running around to get to Playa del Carmen to catch the ferry to Cozumel.
