Gate City (Shipwreck) - East Moriches NY

Loading...
The Gate City was a Savannah Line freight steamer built in 1878. It was scheduled for a course from Savannah to Boston when it ran aground in a dense fog on Feb. 8th, 1900. At the time it was carrying a cargo of molasses & cotton. It now lies in about 15’ - 25’ water just East of Moriches Inlet.

Tidal currents transport large quantities of sand to/from the wreckage site, exposing different sections throughout the year. A boat dive is recommended due to its distance from shoreline and wave activity in the area.
