1984 - American Tug
The 65 foot King, was a navy tugboat, built in 1941 in South Carolina. Brought to Bermuda, to be used as a dive and salvage boat having her own compressor and cascade system for filling tanks onboard. In 1984 she became the first boat in Bermuda to be scuttled deliberately to use as a dive site and was promptly sunk about 1/2 mile off Bermuda’s south shore in 65 feet of water. She landed half with her bow on the reef and her stern in the sand at about a 45 degree list to Starboard. Located just beyond the wreck of the Marie Celeste. The King, lies in 65 feet of water, just off the south shore. She is fully Intact With a 45 degree list to Starboard. Limited penetration is possible and presents an excellent site for photography and has featured in many advertising campaigns by the Bermuda government. The pilot house can be explored as can the galley. You can even peer into the engine room, it is not advisable to enter the engine room as confined space and large silty deposits could ruin the dive for others. The 45 degree list has the unsettling ability to completely disorientate divers, so it is essential to make regular reference to avoid ascending when you think your descending.

The 65 foot long wreck will not take too long to thoroughly explore. Venturing into the expansive reef structure is a treat not to be missed. The sand holes around the wreck are well known for the abundance of shells often found here. Pay close attention and you should find Tritons, Cowries, Tellins and Flamingo Tongues as well as large quantities of tropical fish.
