Lake Texoma - Denison Dam (Texas side) - Denison TX

Loading...
Lake Texoma - Denison Dam (Texas side) is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located at None, Denison, TX 75020. This dive site has an average rating of 3.00 out of 5 from 2 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 41-50ft/12-15m. The average visibility is 16-20ft/5-6m.

On the Texas side near the dam there are numerous places you can get in and out of the water easily. There’s an asphalt parking lot near a boat launch that is close to the water. It’s a short hike to easy water entries from the asphalt parking lot. This is a completely free site. The only charge is for launching a boat but there’s no need to use a boat to dive it. For those with a four wheel/all wheel drive vehicle and not worried about getting stuck there are some places you can park right next to the water if you dare. It’s not pretty to look at but there is a bathroom if you really needed it. (It’s poorly maintained so you may need to bring your own toilet paper.) I put the depth at 43ft but this was based on my observations from a single dive on 2/7/2015. It’s probably far deeper in places. There is no scuba support at all. You have to bring full tanks and anything else you may need to dive it. There are restaurants nearby. There are shops you can get things like snacks, bottled water, sodas, etc close by in Denison, TX.

most of the time it is only good for night dives. this year the water has gone over the spill way 3 times. this is the first time ever it has done that not a lot of activity most still can’t get to baot ramps.

I went scuba diving here on 2/7/2015. Average viz: 16-20ft/5-6m. Water temp: Under 50°F/10°C.
I’ve wanted to dive Lake Texoma for years and I finally got around to it. Some people say dive it from Eisenhower State Park. They charge you $5 for a day pass. They wouldn’t even give me a 30 minute free pass to take a look around. Bah! That’s nonsense. I found some free places on the Texas side near the dam that were easy to get to. The vis was really good for a lake dive. It was mostly silty bottom and gently sloped. I have no idea how much distance we covered but we got as deep as 40 ft. Texoma has had zebra mussels since 2010 and I found piles of their shells. Strangely I didn’t see many living zebra mussels. I also saw shells of huge 6" clams. It was pretty clean too. There wasn’t much of the junk jerk boaters toss in the water. It was obvious this area is used as a nesting area for perch or perhaps bass in the summer. There were remains of 1000s of nests. Some were fresh enough you could still see small rocks at the bottom that hadn’t been covered by silt again. There wasn’t many active fish but that’s no surprise this time of year. I did see a giant 8’ gar that scared the crap out of me and a smaller one a moment later. It was pretty good for a winter dive. I’d like to dive it again sometime.

I reviewed my dive computer and it says I reached 43ft at some point.
