DiveBuddy.com Web Server To Be Hosted UnderwaterDiveBuddy.com, the world’s largest online social network designed exclusively for scuba divers, will be the first website ever to be hosted underwater. Yes you heard that right, our webserver will be underwater! We have researched equipment and networking infrastructure and within a few weeks, everything will be hosted underwater. Except for a few cables breaching the surface to provide power, video/input devices and Internet connectivity, all computer and networking equipment will be under 18" of water in a controlled indoor environment.

The attached photo illustrates the type of hardware we plan to use. Not only is a water proof case required, but liquid cooling and other high tech devices need to be used to make this a reality.

You will not notice any changes to DiveBuddy.com, except everything you see on the website will be served by a computer that is entirely underwater somewhere. How fitting for scuba diving social network :) All of our members would rather be underwater, I figured our web server would to.

More details will be provided later. Dive safe and dive often!

Now that is one for the books!! I have also been in IT for many years, 16 to be exact, and have hear of attempts at this but never heard of successful completion. I wish you the best Greg and look forward to hearing about the project details.

I got my open water cert over the weekend by Greg and he showed us pictures of the enclosure and where the server will be hosted. It’s quite impressive to say the least. In my 14 years of working in IT, this is the first I have ever seen or heard of someone doing so I’m quite curious to see how it turns out.

My initial response was... "Isn’t it a bit early for the April 1 joke???" Well Greg, if this real, this is definitely cool! If it is an early April 1 joke, it is still totally cool!

What a cool idea! Babe, you’re a genius! That’s why I married you and you’re pretty cute.

I’m going to take this one step further and turn the water tank into an aquarium with fish! This is going to be cool! I’ll of course have a backup server just in case there is a leak.
chazrich - 3/26/2010 7:17 AM
This is great, but why only 18" of water. I mean this is a fish tank, right? I have to admit, it’s still very cool.
