Spearfishing in 110’ off Ft Lauderdale. We were freediving and I was only about 25’ below the surface. The fish swam lazily past me and I shot when he was about 10’ away. That’s when the fun began as he tore off on a blistering run, almost emptying the reel on the speargun. As soon as he stopped I reeled in a bunch of line and started pressuring him> But he was having none of it and took off again, reeling off the line that I had taken up. But now he was beginning to tire and after one more short run he stopped and just swam around in circles below me. Slowly I reeled line in so as not to tear the spear out of the soft flesh, and before long he was at the surface where I got my fingers in the gills and he was done. The whole thing took not longer than 10mts but it seemed like an hour.
