Getting into a semi-dry easily

Hi.

I’m having major trouble getting into my semi-dry suit. I have a front zip Oceanic 7mm semi-dry. It is not a case of it being to small, or me picking up weight.
The area that I get stuck in is around the shoulders and arms. It requires monumental tugging on my dive buddy’s part to get it on properly.

Does anybody know of a lubricant that I can put inside my suit or rub on myself to help slide on the arms without the getting stuck part?

Try using a plastic bag for the arms and legs

If only the arms and legs were the problem Peter.

It’s the upper arms and shoulders where it gets stuck.

I wear a diveskin (lycra) suit under my suit. It keeps the outer (wet or semidry) suit from sticking.

I also use surgilube (or other water based lube gel) to help slide the seals (semi-dry or dry).

The other thing that you can try is to put a plastic bag over your hands/feet and then slide the suit/seal over the bag, then remove the bag after the suit is on.

Do not use a petro based lube.

A spray bottle with water may help lubricate and the upside is there is nothing to clean up later. As others have suggested a dive skin or rash guard may help.

It seems to me that any suit should just lay over the skin... Not having to streach over it.. I had a wetsuit custom fitted for me by a wetsuit taylor.. Its suppose to lay over the skin and with no air pockets.. Take yours to a wetsuit taylor and have it alterred perfectly.. No mail order stuff or have the shop send it out.. Have the taylor measure, cut and do the entire job.. You’ll be much happier..

Won’t baby oil and KY make my suit all iffy on the inside though?

Baby Oil will likely cause the suit materail to degrade. KY will not cause the materail to degrade but it will make your suit a little slick on the inside. Though I do believe that is the intent. You can also try a silicone based lube called Wet Platinum. They also make a second product for the removal of Wet Platinum. Meanwhile, stop going to the gym to work on those guns - you are showing all of us guys at the dive site up in a most terrible way.

Do you mean your semi-dry is always dry? I thought they got semi-wet!

K-Y Warming gel for cold water :) I’ve seen divers use a spray bottle of 50/50 baby shampoo and water on the tough spots and that seems to work.

Hi Pixel,

I dive Henderson Insta Dry, really sticks to your skin.

To put it on, I spray a solution of baby shampoo/ water (we use that as mask

defog) in arms and legs. It glides on like a lycra suit.

A lycra suit or shirt would help too.

Good luck,

Peter

I say talcum powder or baby powder. A "skin or rash guard" is also helpful...but your own skin on suit I find talcum powder works wonders. I use it on my wrist and neck seals on my dry suit. thanks.

YES YOUR RIGHT... BABY OIL WILL/CAN DEGRADE THE SUIT...

BUT K Y HAS MORE USES...BETTER TO HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT ...THEN NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT !

OTHERS TO THINK OF (DRY SIDE)

BAKING SODA- -CORN STARCH- AT LEAST THEY ARE BIO-DEGRADABLE.

WHATEVER YOU DO DON’T COMBINE THE WET WITH THE DRY.

WE’LL BE CALLING YOU THE BAKER WO-MAN.

i’ve used a standard lift-top water bottle with plain water and a few good squirts of liquid dish soap. you can pick your fragrance!

You have received some great suggestions. In my experience I had a similar problem, yes however due to additional poundage :) , I find that a slight strech by pulling the bottom part of the torso of the suit up makes bringing the shoulders on much easier. I have observed that many divers do this almost as habit and probably don’t realize that they are giving their suit a little tug upwards or performing this strech for the suit as they roll their shoulders.

As the suits are rubber, they tend to compress slightly and so they may seem to fit correctly once the legs are in and you start for the upper body, but in actuality due to the compression they might be a bit ’short’. A good tug upwards for the mid-section helps make the entry for arms and shoulders much easier in my experience.

Hi I have the same suit I wear a henderson Lycra skin under also have hood ed vist. When I put mine on I squat dowen to drop the sholder into the wet suit in stead of trying to pull it on up to the sholders also roll the cuff this seams to help. The other thing I heared that helps is boby shampoo
