Christmas Eve Dive

So, I am just throwing this out there, but it’s supposed to be 70 degrees this Christmas Eve in the garden state, and with an early (but manageable) high tide at 05:52 am, I was thinking of doing a Christmas Eve dive (leaning towards the Shark River Inlet but open to other salt water options). Why? Two main reasons...1) To continue this ridiculous El Nino dive season on the east coast (won’t happen for along time where I’ll be able to dive wet this deep into the season in local waters) and 2) The tide is early enough that I could get a 45 minute dive in and get home well before 10:00 am and enjoy the more "tradition" holiday festivities. Curious if anyone else had any similar thoughts for this Thursday.

Yeah, I understand it won’t be 70 yet, even at 50 is very much dive-able, if it wasn’t Christmas eve I’d opt for the later tide of 18:18, but with dinners and all, not going to fly on Christmas eve. Hey, if it’s close to 60 when I get out of the water, that’s great in my book :) .

From BeekeeperGreg: New Years Eve tides around lunch!!!

No, no, New Years Eve dives need to start in 2015 and surface in 2016, it screws with the dive log :)

There was a dive club (RIP) that used to do one at Sandy Hook, I think that even included fireworks over NYC

Heading to Boston for Christmas - will need to miss but maybe I can squeeze in a dive up there? Looks like rain is in the forecast...

Oh well, you are my 3 go to buddies, can’t justify doing it solo (as much as I’d love to dive) Come January I switch to 4 10hr days (Wednesday thru Saturday) so if we get any good days, I’m free those days. Why couldn’t the 70 degree December day be between Christmas and New Year’s.

Awesome, that’s the spirit Carl...I wasn’t going to drive the hour and 45 minutes to dive alone. I was up way too late anyway to be waking up to make that early tide. Maybe the warm weather will hang around a bit longer.

Anyone around Sunday? Didn’t even check the tides but see it’s going to be warm then as well.

Mike,
I had the same idea, but my wife made plans. Finding another wife is harder than finding another dive opportunity. Good luck.

Looking like a 8:30ish high tide, has potential, might do it solo just to get wet again and play with the camera.

I’m planning on going down tomorrow, should be there 745 or so. Bringing my family, they’ll have breakfast as I dive.

Dove the north side of Shark River Inlet with Jonah. Really enjoyed the ease of entry from that side of the river, lots of structure to check out under there, neat orange, white, and yellow sponges encrusting most structures. Saw a few small anenomes as well. Visibility wasn’t too good, cloudy 4 or 5 ft at best. I’d like to explore it again when the visibility is better. Exit wasn’t as bad as I thought (even with my beast of a camera), just timed it with the swell and it was fine.

I like the Avon side better too but it usually has too many fishing lines in the water in warmer weather.

Christmas eve my wife says, you should go diving tomorrow with Mike! Unfortunetly all of the dive gear was packed in the RV by then :(

We ended up going Sunday morning the 26th, tide had a nicer time (8:30 am instead of 5:50 am). Crazy, we have ice up here today...is this the start of "real" winter, guess time will tell? I know it’s going to warm up a bit a the week progresses. If we have air temps over 55, I’ll consider diving again.
