First Recovery Gig

I have my first search and recovery gig this evening. 10’ I-Beam in 40’ of water with a decent current. I am gonna set up like this. 50lb wt on a new, good rope, marked every 10 ft. with high viz tape. Its been rainin here so the vis is probaly around 1-6" at that depth. Gonna use the rope to decend and the tape for depth indication as I decend. I will put the wt. in the water and let it rest on the bottom so I will know the max depth before I enter the water. May also have a rope tied to my BC incase the current gets me, I can surface and can be pulled back to the structure. Contractor says he can get me within 2’ of the beam, but we all know how that goes. Contractor says there is a shackle already on the beam and all I need to do is hook up the cable. Any suggestions??

I hope you have a buddy going down with you, recovery can be dangerous, especially in currents.
Good luck !

I would be prepared to run a sweep pattern. That also means having someone on the other end who knows what signals to look for and how to feed you line. From your description the viz is gonna stink so you are going to probably be feeling your way along. Not to mention the current. Plus I would find a replica of the shackle and practice securing it with your lift rope with a blindfold on. Prepare for possible entanglement - two cutting devices at the ready and finally as Plmr747 said........get a good buddy! Oh, one more thought - if the conditions are bad - thumb it.

I would at the very least have some surface support with signals worked out.

None of my business but you have been certified for a year & you are going to attempt commercial diving in near zero vis with a high current? I know for a fact that job does not pay enough for the risks even for a qualified diver!!!!!!!!!!! Oh & by the way if you get hurt DAN will not cover this only rec diving YOUR LIFE IS NOT WORTH A SMALL PAYCHECK OR A 10’ I BEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
