LED device allows divers to talk under water

Here’s another device allowing divers to talk to each other underwater:

LED device allows divers to talk under water:

A company in Okinawa Prefecture has developed the world’s first
communications device that enables divers to "talk" with one
another below the surface using light signals.

Marine Comms Ryukyu Inc.’s i-MAJUN system uses a light-emitting
diode flashlight and a special diving mask that facilitates
underwater communication.

The mask converts a diver’s voice into blinking LED signals
that are transmitted to another diver, where the signals are
converted back into a voice that can be heard over speakers
embedded in the mask.

The i-MAJUN system allows novice divers to take lessons on
the spot. It is also expected to be used by professional
divers to explore the seabed.

Marine Comms Ryukyu spent six years developing and improving
the device, which retails for about 250,000 yen ($2,500).

This one is a bit pricey ($2,500), so it better work pretty darn good for that type of investment!

Anybody given this one a try?

I would have to see this work to believe it is of any reliability. There are way too many things to interrupt a light signal under water.

Learning sign language is a lot cheaper and it doesn’t need batteries. I’m actually surprised divers don’t learn more than the handful of scuba specific signs (danger; low air; lion fish; shark; etc). My wife and I both sign, so we can have much better communications down under. Learning signs are as easy as watching YouTube videos - or better yet, join your local sign language class (which is how I got started).

...my interest would be as an instructor, using it for safety purposes, not in place of hand signals, but in the case of a near panic situation, where a student is not longer able to use hand signals to communicate their issue or understand my hand signals trying to calm them down. It would be great for that type of situation!
