Long Island Night Dive

On Friday, October 2nd, Long Island Divers Association will will be holding a Marine Biology night dive at the Ponquogue Bridge .They will start with a light BBQ(naturally) around 6pm and then gear up for the 7:55 high tide. The objective of the dive will be to collect indigenous species for observation and release, and to capture as many of the tropicals that have gathered in the area as possible. As these would normally die as the water turns cold, we will attempt to find them all good homes in local salt water aquariums. Collection tools are as simple as a mesh bag or aquarium or butterfly nets. The biologists will brief us on collection techniques prior to the dive and tell us all about our finds afterwards. Tara Duffy of SOMAS has assembled a team of marine scientists from a variety of fields.

Hi, I’ll be in Long Island that Friday. I’m suppose to dive that Bridge on Sunday morning. On Saturday I’ll be headed for Dutch Springs then returning to Long Island for the bridge dive on Sunday. I’m suppose to be visiting my daughter but the bridge is my real reason for the trip. This event sounds interesting. Is it open to other divers.. how can I find out?

LIDA events are open to all divers, the more the merrier. If you’d like I can forward the e-mail to you. There is a contact number for any questions. The president of the club is Bill , also a member of Dive Buddy. His Dive Buddy profile name is scubabum.

Yes, if you don’t find forwarding the email to me I’d appreciate it. I wasn’t sure if you had to be a member of that organization, which I don’t mind doing. It sounds like fun... and a good cause. Maria

Please report back and let us know how the event went and what was collected. That sounds like great fun! Wish I was closer... :(

The barbecue was great, thanks to LIDA for the food and drinks. Marine biologists and scientists from the local schools gave a short pre dive briefing and then it was time to gear up and get wet. Currents around the bridge are severe, so it is imperative to be in the water for slack tide. This gives you about 20 minutes before the tide turns and starts ripping again. The dive went well. Several tropicals where collected. 3 Foureye Butterflyfish, a Bigeye, and a Bluespotted Cornet fish. Visibility was less than perfect with a max around 4 ft. which made spotting the tropicals difficult to say the least since they where only between 1/2 to 2 inches long. These fish come up north on the gulf stream and wind up in the bays of Long Island. If they are not found and collected, they would not survive the cold northeast winters. Dive Buddy Oceanfloor made the trip from Ohio, which I’m pretty sure was the greatest distance traveled to make a half hour night dive in bad vis.

It was cool. My first time in salt water. I wasn’t properly weighted though and couldn’t see worth a darn underwater. Gosh I hope I didn’t step on some of those cute little fish. This is usually a very short dive and no time to make gear adjustments. The food was great. I enjoyed meeting several members of the Long Island Diver’s Association and a couple of members from divebuddy. TColJeep and Scubabum.. great guys. Scubabum cooked up all the hotdogs and hamburgers you could eat. Over all a great event.
