Almirante - Miami FL

Loading...
Almirante is a fresh water dive site, located in Miami, FL.

The Almirante was originally called HMS Gillstone and was built in 1943. She was 185 feet long with a beam of 28 feet and was used as a cargo ship that was sunk in 1974 off Elliot Key. The ship lay on the bottom completely intact after being sunk by DERM (Department of Environmental Resource Department) and was covered in stunning corals until 1992 when Hurricane Andrew caused havoc around many of the dive sites around Miami and The Almirante was also caught up by Mother Nature’s ferocity and the wreck returned to the bottom upside down. Scuba Dive Miami This is a deep dive so Miami scuba diving centers will want evidence that you are capable of exploring this wreck at 135 feet. The goliath grouper is resident at this wreck and there is plenty of other marine life such as jacks and barracuda to be spotted amongst the remains of this cargo ship. The steel hull is still covered with bright corals some of which were damaged during Hurricane Andrew but they are still worth a photograph and the twisted metal that lays scattered around is great for exploring and photographing the marine life around this once proud ship. With the new growths of corals both soft and hard, and with the opportunity to see a variety of marine life throughout the wreckage this has again become one of Miami’s best known and popular dive sites.
