Better Diver Quarry - Madison AL

Loading...
Better Diver Quarry is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located at 600 Lime Quarry Road, Madison, AL 35758. This dive site has an average rating of 3.50 out of 5 from 8 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 41-50ft/12-15m. The average visibility is 21-25ft/6-8m. This dive site provides bathrooms and airfills. Training platforms are available.

NASA stuff in the quarry. F4 fighter, parts of space lab, rocket, firetrucks, boats, houseboats, silos, NASA junkyard....

Also, the water has risen in the past few years so now the max depth is around 45-49 ft and in spots a little deeper I have been told, but I have not found it to be true. In the spring the joke is who is going to get their parking lot cert. because it is always flooded. This quarry is a great training spot, Brett (owner of Better Divers) has added better platforms and so on just for that reason.

If you have enough divers he will stay open for night dives.

Interesting and convenient place, when it’s open.

Star rating is due only to the closure of the quarry. When it was open it was beautiful - easy in and out - lots to see, etc.

Sad to say quarry is closed. This was discovered upon arrival after a 2 1/2 hour drive. (Website where we printed our releases prior to leaving the house had not been updated). I did manage t reach the owner who stated the closure was due to issues with obtaining the 2014 contract with the governing agency.

As far as quarries go it is above average. Things to see and courses (lines) to follow. Visibility is always a question but that is normal. 12 feet is great, but with rain and divers much less. With more improvements to facilities will be a good training site with easy in and out.

We went here on Saturday for 2 dives. The staff on hand was very friendly. Visibility was only 8-12 feet. The thermocline was sitting around 23 feet, and was pretty cold for a shorty (66 deg F). I’d like to go back so I can get some photos of the lunar lander that is supposed to be sitting down there somewhere. I forgot all about it though! Will have to go again soon I guess.

Was visiting down here and had the opportunity to dive this location. Went to a nearby dive shop before hand to get tanks, but it turns out you can rent tanks and get refills on-site. There is a fee per diver at this site and this quarry is strictly reserved for divers (non-divers can come with divers). They have quite a few objects to see and there are string lines running between all of the sunken objects to make it easy to navigate between most sites. Did three dives the day I went, the viz did drop on the second dive during peak hours when the quarry was fairly busy, but the viz was still more than sufficient to enjoy the dive.

It would be nice if these places had websites to find out prices... I am looking forward to diving anywhere I can. With being new to this, I want to gain as much knowledge as I can.
