Located in the shallow reef area surrounding Chubb Head Beacon, this Blue Water Divers exclusive is close to Bad Caves. Named because the coral landscape resembles that of Arizona’s Bad Lands. A little journalistic license perhaps!
These coral heads are riddled with caves, overhangs and crevices, which provide ample hiding places for lobsters and Glass-eyed Sweepers. A carpet of reef with minimal amounts of sand makes for difficult safe anchoring. Average depths are 25 to 30 feet with sections as shallow as 5 feet making for interest approaches during low tide!!
Due to the complex nature of the reef structure and the lack of pattern to the topography, a guided tour is strongly recommended. Not only to avoid becoming totally lost, but also to avoid problems with the numerous caves and tunnel. Many of the coral heads are actually hollow labyrinths.
This site is particularly "fishy" due in part to its location close to a fisheries preserve. Large schools of Barracuda and Parrot Fish are often seen. The caves and over hangs offer protection for Lobsters, Glass-eyed Sweepers and large Groupers. Look out for Speckled Moray Eels hiding in the "deep" reef. The reef structure in Bermuda is particularly old; as such the reef is "deeper" than might be found in The Caribbean. Move slowly over the reef and peer in all the crevices. This is typically were many of the reef fish will be hiding from divers.
The shallow depth of this site offers great light and colour retention. Always a popular choice with photographers and fish-spotters. The nutrient rich waters that pas close and the infrequent disturbance leave site a superb example of almost undisturbed reef life. REMEMBER.... THE REEF IS FRAGILE! PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH OR TREAD ON LIVING CORAL.
