1st wreck dive and felt very comfortable at depth. Took some nice picture at stern near propeller, but did not wait for bubbles to clear faces before taking picture (note to self for future). Registered 99’ at bow of boat. Interesting history given to us by guide (notes are in dive location details). Hilma Hooker is the most famous wreck of Bonaire. The wreck lies relatively close to the shore and is marked by three yellow buoys. Hilma Hooker lies on her side, parallel to the coast, with the deepest point at 34 meters. Go before 07.30 if your want to enjoy the wreck peacefully. After 08:15 the site will be crowded with divers and dive boats for tourists. Hilma Hooker was a drug ship that faked engine trouble and illegally dropped anchor. A raid after giving time for boat to depart turned up the drugs and no crew were ever seen again after fleeing. Police and customs took out twelve tons of marijuana hidden the a ship’s hull. The boat was to be taken out to sea to have sunk but was sabotaged overnight for the sake of a local wreck to dive. 100’ can be registered by dive computer by placing wrist on the sand at the bow end of the boat.
