International Clean Up DayThe International Aquatic Cleanup is the world’s largest and oldest volunteer effort to clean up our marine environment. Each year volunteers remove and record data on the trash and debris collected from their local beaches, rivers, dams, lakes and streams - along shorelines and underwater. Since 1986 over six million volunteers in 127 countries have participated in this global event involving every major body of water on the planet. The Southern African Underwater Ecological Society in partnership with The Ocean Conservancy participated in the clean up at Bass Lake in Meyerton on the 15/09/07. Divers completed two clean up dives on Saturday the 15th September with the good news that only minor refuse was found underwater. On completion of the dives divers along with volunteer non-divers walked around Bass Lake to pick up any refuse found on shore. Data collected on the day will be analyzed to identify the activities and general sources causing debris. An annual report will be created and distributed to help educate the public, business, industry and government officials about marine debris issues.

Alas, I wish I had known about this in advance. (Of rouse, I`m a new member, so didn`t have a chance to hear about it here, and didn`t hear anything about it from other groups I`m involved with.) Could you post a link to the sponsoring organization, so that we can get involved next year? If there aren`t yet any participating groups in our areas, perhaps by next year we can get a few more together. Thanks for the information.
