UPDATE: Trip completed. I didn’t map this out well...thought I wanted to try Disneyworld and the Manatees. We snorkeled with the Manatees at Crystal River Florida. A great trip. We stayed in the Days Inn and did the Snorkel Trip with the shop right behind them. A Very Professional organization. Some groups/people are trying to stop the interaction tours...completely stupid. Enforcing the current regulations and mandatory education/training for staff and visitors alike is the answer. Not renting boats to every tourist who visits Florida would do wonders for the Manatee population. They loved the interaction...the ones that didn’t want to interact laid on the bottom.

Dove with Amy Slate’s Amoray Dive Center out of Key Largo. They helped us get scheduled with another boat when their boat engine had a catastrophic failure (a definate Plus on their part for customer service, ensuring we could dive). Saw some great sites. We weren’t impressed by the room for the rate or the shining personalities/practices of some of the staff (Instructors of all people). I got a very money oriented vibe with not a love for diving (it seemed like a chore to interact with the divers/customers. I didn’t think they lived up to the reviews in thos magazines.

My wife and I are going to hit Florida 03-07 JAN 09 while I am on leave from Afghanistan. I am looking for Dive Sites, boats, trips, shops, etc. We are planning on the Manatee dive already...now I need some more open water dive site/trip recommendations. POCs are greatly appreciated; however, I can work with basic "try this place/shop/boat trip" as well. Thanks.

Hello. I just saw your blog so you may have already booked something, but Key Largo is probably the best diving in Florida (in my opinion). There are wrecks, reefs etc so there are lots of options depending on experience level. I can recommend a few places depending on what you want. If you want to stay at a nice reasonable place that isn’t real fancy, look at Amy Slate’s Amoray dive. I believe they are running a special package for rooms/diving combos. If you want to stay at a nicer full service hotel, check out the Marriot in Key Largo. It is the only one so you can find them on their website. There is a dive operator on site called "Its a Dive". They also have a website and I have dived with them and they are very safe and will go to requested areas.

Hope this helps.

I live in Jupiter, Fl, and think we have some of the best diving around in Florida (I happen to be biased, of course, but many others from out of state agree with me and come here to dive). I dive with Jupiter Dive Center www.Jupiterdivecenter.com exclusively, because I think they are the best, safest, and know the reefs to go to see the most moray eels, turtles, rays, shark, and tropicals. It’s drift diving, so not much work involved....:-)

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Oh, and thanks for all you do!

We currently have 272 dive site listings in FL: http://www.divebuddy.com/divesites.aspx?State=FL

I have been to Devils Den, near Williston, FL before and had a great time. It’s like cavern diving...lots of big catfish.

I also dove Manatee Springs, but the manatee’s were off somewhere else when I was there. Good luck finding a few sites.
