The laboratory of Dr. Milton S. Love at UC Santa Barbara has three openings for Research Divers/Laboratory Assistants for the 2008 fieldwork season. We are investigating rockfish recruitment to oil platforms and deepwater reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel. DUTIES: Perform fish surveys on SCUBA on oil platforms and deepwater reefs, at depths to 120 feet. Identify local marine fishes to species. Conduct diving operations from small (22’) boats under a variety of weather conditions. Collect and process fish specimens using a variety of field gear. Data entry, word processing, and other computer tasks such as scheduling, graphics, GIS, and database management. Operate underwater video system. Perform repairs and general maintenance of field sampling equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: AAUS Research Diver Certification (or ability to obtain certification). Must provide personal SCUBA gear. Experience on small boats and ability to control seasickness. California driver’s license. Must be able to work an alternative work schedule (work days in excess of 8 hours will be common), some weekends, and occasional extended (overnight) research cruises. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: AAUS Research Diver Certification to a depth of no less than 100 feet. One year or more experience conducting subtidal research, fish surveys in particular, on SCUBA. One year or more experience handling small boats in adverse sea conditions and on trailer. UCSB Small Boat Captain Certification with Channel Islands clearance or similar certification from another institution. Scuba diving training beyond the Open Water level. START/END DATES: May 1 to September 30, 2008. COMPENSATION: Approximately $2,500 per month. Health benefits will not be provided although standard worker`s compensation policies do apply.
