Research marine biologist specializing in kelp forest ecology, underwater videographer and newspaper columnist. I produce a daily cable TV show focusing on the marine life of southern California kelp forests (and warmer waters when funds permit!), write a weekly newspaper column and have produced a series of educational underwater DVD`s on SoCal marine life as well as Belize, the Sea of Cortez, the Bahamas, the Philippines, Palau and the Red Sea. I spend a lot of time in the upper 100 feet of the water column where the giant kelp (Macrocystis) forms our wonderful kelp forests. However I also dive frequently in the 150-200 ft range to film the subtle ecosystems of our deeper waters off Santa Catalina Island. I do anywhere from 100 to 300 dives a year. Not bad for a senior citizen (whose age is usually guessed at 50-55, probably a result of all the salt water "baths" I take!). I dive with some incredible buddies, almost all of whom are female dive professionals. However, every one of them is spoken for... they dive with me because I`m a gentleman and very knowledgeable about SoCal`s marine life. I`m still looking for my ultimate dive buddy who will sail off into the sunset with me (preferably on someone else`s boat). Future dive travel plans include a return to Palau for 5-6 weeks, the Maldives and the Galapagos... possibly all next year. I was recently given a dry suit so Antarctica will eventually fill out my sweep of diving the seven continents, one of my life`s goals.

OH no! I failed my reef check test...not only that, I caused all the fishes to vanished! Now I`m sad...

Thanks! But I`m a skier too! lol I didn`t know about that statistic. Very interesting. Especially since I don`t know of anyplace in MD--except for Deep Creek Lake--for divers to go! Some brave the Susquehana for colonial artifacts but that`s a zero vis dive and quite muddy. That doesn`t include offshore diving of course. All the divers I know go to PA and elsewhere for inland diving. lol

Bill, I`m sure you`ll manage some how. When are you going? I`ll be going there next spring. Wayne

Well thanks for the forgiveness on the cold water. Honestly if I didn`t freeze, I would dive the cold waters - there are some beautiful things to see. Oh and you look great for being 60! I never would have guessed it! Enjoy the cold waters for me.

I`ve seen those cool critters. I was certified in Monterey for my open water and my advanced. Just more to see in the warm water and I`m not constantly wanting to abort the dive because I am frozen.
