Hi All!

Lately we have had requests from "single" divers who are interested in "sharing a room" if it really brings down the cost.

My question is this...

How many of you, if were offered the chance to dive in the Caribbean, and it was a place you enjoyed to go would room with a single diver, you did not know?

What would you want to know about the person?? Would you be willing to just say "room me with whomever".

Ed said (hubby) he did it years ago and it was just fine...

Would love to hear ALL feedback....

I think it would be great. Hopefully the dive community is as trustworthy as the few divers Ive had the pleasure of meeting and rooming with. It works out well, and you can see the great places of the Caribbean a little cheaper...

I’ve been on a few vacations where I’ve roomed with complete strangers. They were all very nice, polite and considerate. I had no problems with any of them. None of them borrowed, or even looked through, my stuff without asking. I’d have no problem rooming with whomever I was asked to room with.

That said, I still prefer my privacy and would pay a single supplement to have my own room.

I think it would be fine as long as everyone involved is respectful of their roommates.

Why not room with a stranger? I have yet to be on a dive trip where I knew my roommate beforehand. There have been zero problems. A little courtesy goes a long ways and most divers I know are pretty courteous.

Heck there is a web site devoted to single divers, and no it is not a hookup/dating site. It is for divers without buddies but non-divers are welcome also. They arrange several trips a year. No reason DiveBuddy can’t do the same.

What would I like to know?

Night owl or early bird?

Smoker? (outside of room only)

Photographer? If they are going to be my dive buddy also.

Hard core diver or strictly recreational laid back diver?

Snoring level in decibels? Should I bring ear plugs?

Absolutely yes ! I met up in Hawaii with only on-line communications ( thru Aqua Dreams) to stay for a weekno problems and we are now great friends. Great way to meet others and make a trip more reasonable !! Vicki

Hello Liz,

I do it all the time and have never had an issue. That goes with the diving and climbing.

I personally wouldn’t do it. No offense to anyone, but I don’t feel I would be very comfortable rooming with a complete stranger, especially with all my gear about, got loads of money tied up into it. As for me, no, I would never room with a complete stranger.

I am adventurous, but meeting my roomie in the lobby before we get a key to the same room, would probably be where I STOP being adventurous!

I prefer to be alone in my room, and often pay more to be alone.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF WE COULD BE ALONE, AND NOT BE PUNISHED BY JACKING UP THE RATES AND INSTEAD JUST TAG MAYBE $50 EXTRA BUCKS ON!

If one DID share a room: Hopefully it would be a respect factor: Don’t touch my sht, I won’t touch yours!

I would require to know this persons habit prior to sharing:

Partyer? Smoker? Snorer? Sloppy? Considerate? Trustworthy? Basically knowing the person habitually would be helpful to see itf it aligns with your lifestyle and rooming style.

Hotels and resorts do not punish singles, DiveGirl, it is just the simple matter of splitting the room cost! If a room cost $100 bucks on one person stays in it, it is just that. If you get two, it is $50 per person.

Please don’t take it out of context.

Thanks!

Single divers are "not punished"!!!! Its all about the cost to open the room, etc. As Sunset says...if the room part is $100 it is $100...its there for a reason.

If you take the dbl occupancy price for one and only add $50....you are 99% sure not going to cover your costs for opening the room...

In the past, I have shared cabins on live aboards in Fiji ( 2006) and in PNG( 2008) with women I did not know... they were both from the UK and lovely people. I lucked out. Now I either travel with my dive buddy or pay the single supplement:-(. I would never share a room with a stranger .

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting up with divers who were not necessarily single but we did share expenses and roomed together.
There are two ways I would look at this.
From a security stand point; if my wife was a diver and wanted to go on a dive trip and share expenses with another diver I would not be concerned if she were rooming with another female or two; or even sharing expenses with a male as long as there were at least two other females. I would have great concern is she wanted to share expenses with "Bull" or "Ernesto" or "Tank" or "Loverman 2000"; in other words a male. I have had nother but wonderful experiences with all of you however it is my duty to protect my family at all cost! Even here I’ve seen responses and forum subject that would lend to questionable character of some of the men (simply speaking in the context of their view on woman).
In the other respect I don’t have those same fears for myself and always welcome the opportunity to save a dollar or two. We can work around any annoyances between us to share our common passion "Diving". If you smoke, would you mind doing it outside of by the window. Yes I snore but I brought my "Breath Rights" with me. No I don’t drink but don’t mind if you do and if you pass out on the floor I’ll put a blanket over you. I don’t steal and will trust that you don’t either. WE CAN WORK IT OUT, NOW LET’S GO DIVE!!!

What is the name of this website? I am a single diver looking for a buddy and I love to travel 2-4 times a year to worldly destinations.

Liz,

I would go for it also. It is hard to find someone who wants to travel and dive as much as I do. I think the "list" should also include the diver’s experience, in addition to smoker, party-ier, and what their goals for the trip are (5-6 dives a day or maybe a dive every other day). I’ve been to Bonaire 5 times (last time was in January staying with you). In addition, I’ve gone to other dive destinations with groups, and livaboard; along with cruising prior to scuba diving - all having someone unknown assigned as my roommate. That worked out fine in all cases, but it worked out even better when I found out who it was going to be and could email or chat about our likes/dislikes and goal for the trip ahead of time.

For me, the additional concern in places like Bonaire when traveling alone are that likely your "cabin mate" is also you dive buddy. I am much more particular with my dive buddy than I am with a cabin/room mate. All the trips prior to the one last January were with a dive club. While I had never met my roommate before, I knew there would be several other divers that such that I could probably find one with similar dive skills and abilities, and I usually did.

As far as taking your equipment, where are they going to go? You are on a small island, and are probably sharing the truck. I can’t imagine how they are going to put your BC/Mask, Regs, or such in their back pocket and sneek them home.
