I have ad a long time facination with old galleon ships and particularly the old Spanish treasure ships. This has sparked an itch that i need to scratch. Yes, I am seeking a dive buddy or few that would be interested in checking out a few of these treasure sites. Lets see if there are some Spanish cobs or reales left!

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,

I’m also in Green Cove Springs looking to do some diving. Very intrigued by your post. I’d like to talk about it and maybe join you. E-mail alan.labeouf@comcast.net. Let’s chat!

What’s the location? Is a flight to Spain involved? :)

Hi vasechek and all others, the consensus is most of the 1715 Spanish plate fleet wreck sites lie between Sebastian Inlet and Ft. Pierce Inlet. with additional (unfound) wrecks either slightly to the north or slightly to the south(or anywhere in between). We will not be going to Spain unless you want to do additional historical research! haha! In that case your paying for the flights. In reality, this will not be an easy carefree relaxing dive. This will be very close to the surf zone out to about 10-15ft. of water. And expectations will be low. Still it is estimated that only 1/2-2/3 of the treasure has been found. A final note this will be done legally and not to encroach upon existing claim sites.

10-15 ft of depth and near surf zone?
Are we talking about excavations? Anything that shallow and close to shore would have washed up, get swept away or must be heavy enough to sink into the bottom to stay put. Surely, any wooden ship around it would have long disintegrated?
Are there known sites that haven’t been sifted through very thoroughly or are you planning to search for undiscovered wrecksites somehow?

I’m on the panhandle where I have not heard of any pirate shipwrecks. Darn, sounds like fun!
