Scuba diver rescues boy from McCurtain County lake Sunday

HOCHATOWN - A 16-year-old boy from Texas is in critical condition after being pulled out of a McCurtain County lake Sunday by a scuba diver who happened to be on the scene, the Oklahoma Lake Patrol reports.

The boy was rescued about 3:10 p.m. Sunday by the scuba diver at Broken Bow Lake at Eagle Point in McCurtain County.

The boy, whose name was not released, was flown to a Little Rock, Ark. hospital in critical condition, the patrol reports.

The patrol reports five adults and the boy were trying to swim from the shore to an island about 112 yards away when the boy went under. The adults were not able to get the boy to the surface when a person wearing scuba gear heard the commotion and swam to the bottom of the lake to rescue the boy in 10 feet of water.

The scuba diver then performed CPR on the boy for about 2 minutes when the victim regained a pulse. The boy was not wearing a life jacket.
