ORPC TidGen Power System

Nick Kaloterakis

The TidGen Power System takes advantage of one of nature’s most consistent energy sources: the tide. It sits on the floor of a bay or deep river, where water rotates foils that drive a permanent magnet generator, sending roughly 150 kilowatts of electricity to shore. The first TidGen unit, installed off the coast of Maine last year, was the first ocean-energy project of any kind to connect to the U.S. grid. An environmental assessment released in March showed no adverse impact to the marine ecosystem.

The blades shouldn’t need to be too sharp and they shouldn’t be moving too fast (only as fast as the current/waves right?)...so even if a scuba diver does get too close, they should just stop rotating without harm to the diver. I agree! Cool dive site! Advanced or higher though :)

Nice, looks like the header on a combine. Much different than the tide and wave generators in Norway.

I don’t think anything this big is going to stop rotating if a diver goes into the blades :(

it could be in a restricted area for all we know,, and theres NO diving in the area,, and besides, if its that big, and has those blades and can do severe harm why should a diver even be near it??

this is off the coast of maine is where its installed, off the coast of eastport and lubec,, that whole area is loaded with tidal pools, its definitely not a dive site, there have been ships sunk due to the moving current and pools
