Lost dives...

I just got certified this last spring while I was down in Okinawa. I got hooked on diving a little over 10 years ago, I was a screamin’ seaman on my first deployment when we pulled into Cairns, Australia. I went on a 2 tank boat dive out on the Great Barrier Reef with a dive tour through a local company. It was an intro to diving type tour. Then in 2009 I went on another 2 tank boat dive this time in Bali, Indonesia. Same type of tour.

How would I go about documenting the dives being that I have long since forgotten the name of the companies. OK, not sure I ever really knew them. I believe both companies were PADI affiliated.

Did you pay by credit card, you should be able to pull up old statements online to get dates and the ops name.

Did you use a digital camera on those trips, providing you set the camera up right it records date and time for each picture, okay for those locations you’ll need to figure out the time zone which is one of the reasons mine is set for a 24 hour clock.

The dive log is a journal of your adventures, I would make pages for those dives and fill in what you remember.

I just logged them. Never really had any issues with my dives being questioned. I just wrote in the name of my dive buddys - filled out the log completely and called it a day. Afterall a dive is a dive is a dive.....I don’t believe that there is a precertified/post certified designation. Some shops can be a little picky about when a dive is conducted - taking a deep dive before taking the class....but the fact of the matter is you did the dive. Count it!

If you used your dive computer the info such as dates and depths will be stored in the memory. You could retreive them to recreate your logs.

From sethness: Whoa. Am I hearin’ what I’m hearin’? If you’re documenting dives just for your own amusement, do whatever you like. However, if you’re documenting proof so that you can later a) become an instructor or b) go on similar but exclusive deep/wreck/drift dives or c) documenting sea time to become a US boat captain, there’s a world of difference between just writing it up yourself and having independent verification.

You must be in Europe where they’re more rigorous with dive logs. My dive log had never been questioned. In any case if someone wants to cheat they’ll find a way, but in the end if you cheat you’re cheating yourself.

The question was how and not if. Sethness, if one defines a dive as going under water fully equipped would you deny that it was a dive if one did not have a "card"? How would you answer the question about all the early poineers in the field of diving...before the days of NAUI, PADI, SSI, etc........the days when shop made equipment forged diving into what it is today......all those would not be dives by the standard you have established. Just a thought.

My advice is forget about logging dives from 2 to 10 years ago and concentrate on doing more dives now and going forward. Someday you won’t notice the difference between 1000 dives and 1004 dives.

If just for the sake of remembering the dive simply ad a note to your log. If for showing experience to dive operators that you go with in the future you a likely out of luck. Many dive operators want to see previous dives in your log "stamped" and signed by a dive master or a dive shop stamp. In June I was in the Bahamas and the dive master at Sandals was willing to ignore about twenty local quarry and New Jersey shore dives because my log was signed by dive buddies or private boat owners, they looked back to the previous year when I dove at one of their other resorts. Believe me, compared to diving the North Atlantic my dog could dive in the Caribbean. So in the future, take your log with you and get it stamped and signed by the dive operator. living in Florida I have no doubt it wont take you long to build up considerable experience.

I have Many, Many dives from 21 years ago, boat dive, spring dives, and deepwreck dives.... but after the firts year of diving i got out of it for nearly 20 years until recently.... i dont even consider those dives as experience because when i started back i was like a brand new diver....so i just started a new log book from the first dive when i started back and am building experience from there.

You can get information on your dive from your dive computer.
