I will be in North Carolina July 12-15 to do some diving. We plan on going on a charter dive at least one day but would like to tryout shore diving if there are any good sites. Please share any info that any of you have. This will be two of my buddies first salt water dives so please consider that when suggesting sites/

Radio Island is a popular shore dive in NC. I uploaded a picture of a map with the spot to park and dive on the dive site listing on DiveBuddy. The walk from the parking lot to the dive site is a bit long, but it’s worth it. If you have a wagon with big wheels, that would make it a LOT easier. Make sure to dive this spot during high slack tide (check current tide charts). Stay on the surface until you get over the ledge to avoid the spiky sea urchins, then descend along the wall down towards the sandy bottom of the inlet. Expect to see flounder on the bottom and maybe a sea turtle or two if you’re lucky. You want to dive along the wall to check out all little fish and life growing there. Don’t ascend straight up because it is a high traffic area for boats. Ascend going back up the slope of the wall. Bring a safety tube for emergency use.

Have fun!

Where in NC are you going to stay as that will have alot to do with what is good in the area. If you are in the OBX area you will be looking for one thing but if you are further south in the Morehead area that would be diffrent. Let me know and I can give you a list of things off shore depending on location.

The Radio Island dive is a good idea. The walk is more than a bit long though, since big brother took its half of the island back. Definitely need transportation for your gear if possible. Also you should mark with a dive flag, especially on the weekend as the area will be crowded with boat traffic.. Its a great dive though, and the rock jetty is often used by classes for the first check out . Discovery Diving in Beaufort, as well as Olympus in Morehead City offer great service to offshore wreck diving. There are also other dive charter companies in Atlantic Beach , I’m sure you will enjoy the trip if you come to Carteret County .

I dont know much about Topsail, but to the south of there is Carolina Beach with lots of wreck diving charters. Atlantic Beach has any and all you could ever want or need with charter boats on the causeway , and with Olympus Dive Center charter wreck diving in Morehead City and Discovery Diving Charters in Beaufort . A-forementioned Radio Island , between Morehead City and Beaufort. Enjoy!!
