NOTE: the GPS location is a calculated guess about the location. GPS location is actually "to be confirmed".
This is a "mahogany runa-bout speedboat" built by Clint Woodard in the 1930s and operated by himself and his brother. Having sailed the Massawippi for over 20 years and finding that the boat needed too much repair, the owners emptied it of its contents and sank it where it currently rests. According to our research, this boat was used as a carrier for vacationers’ mail and provisions as well as a carrier for pleasure passengers. It is considered to be the last commercial carrier on the lake!
The wreck has been known since at least 1987 and is visited regularly. Inside, there are several objects that prove beyond any doubt that the boat was sunk deliberately. Its engine and steering system are missing, it contains among other things rocks at its bow, two stoves at its stern as well as several other metal objects. In recent years, there has been marked deterioration with objects missing or moved, the hull being broken in some places.
The Niagara wreck is located on the 40 foot line, opposite the federal wharf in the village of North Hatley. Starting from the left corner of the wharf, set the azimuth at 310 degrees and swim about 150 feet to get there. This part of the lake is very busy. It is best to visit this site very early or very late in the season.
