From EcoDiver; La Jolla Shores in San Diego; "North Wall" dive site is an awesome site for the Advanced Diver who is a vetern Beach Diver. The dive begins in about 50 feet of water, upslope from the beginning of the North Wall. Once you head south to the wall and turn right (west) once you find the wall or slope at 70 feet. The canyon runs west-east there. You should be at or very near to the short beginnings of a rocky wall. This quickly opens up to a 10–15’ tall rocky wall, with lots of cracks and holes in which various critters can be found. Though Shores North Wall does post the challenge of a long swim, divers who pace themselves and reach one of the best dive sites with varied Marine Life, amazing structure and a beautiful "wall" dive. You can expect to see various Rock Fish, Octopus, Nudibranchs, Lizard Fish, Lobsters, Oceanic Whitefish, and Sheephead. Mantis Shrimp, Bat Rays, and Halibut can be found commonly in the sandy areas near the walls. Seasonl finds include Moray Eels, Trigger Fish, Lepoard Sharks, Swell Sharks or a Horn Shark.
Entry & Exits: Use prudent judgement when Beach Diving, perform an environmental assessment of the area before you gear up.
Sandy beach entry in front of the main lifeguard tower, followed by a long surface swim. Descend in at least 50ft of water or where you feel appropriate. Apply a surf entry appropriate to the current conditions and within the scope of your training / experience.
Suggestions: Once you are in front of the main lifeguard tower, look at the row of palm trees lining the sidewalk between the grass park and the sand beach. Look at the palm trees just behind and south of the main lifeguard tower: from the tower running south you will see a pattern: tall, short, tall, short, tall. You need to locate the fifth tree / third tall one. When looking in the background at the houses on the hillside, look above your marker tree. You will find a stark white, rectangular house above your tree. Keep the middle of that house lined up with your tree as you swim west. The house will move up to the top of the tree and eventually to a position well above the tree, this is OK! Just keep them lined up! Now, swim west until the end of the Scripps Pier passes a salmon-colored house on the hillside.
You want the end of Scripps Pier at the western edge of the earth-colored house above the road to Black’s (supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle’s mansion). Descend. You should be in about 50 feet of water, from the beginning of the North Wall. Head south to the wall and turn right (west) once you find the wall or slope at 70 feet. Always bring a powerful dive light, even during a day dive at this site. Look inside cracks and crevices for the creatures listed above. If it’s summer time and the waters are crowded, the Lifeguards might not let you enter the water right in front of the tower. Be advised, there is no regulation prohibiting this. Just don’t push it if it’s a crowded day. If diving from a boat, a depth finder is required to find the way North Wall
