Sunabe Sea Wall aka Sunabe Seawall - Japan

Loading...
Sunabe Sea Wall aka Sunabe Seawall is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located in Okinawa, Japan. This dive site has an average rating of 3.82 out of 5 from 17 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 51-60ft/16-18m. The average visibility is 41-50ft/12-15m.

Sunabe is one of Okinawa’s most popular dive spots (second perhaps to Maeda Point). This is due to several factors: great visibility (usually averages around 40-50 feet), a general lack of sudden current changes (many other Okinawa dive sites are not so fortunate), and lots of entertaining marine life hanging around the coral reef.

Just beyond the large concrete "jacks" lie miles and miles of soft coral and limestone rocks, cracks, crevasses, and short cliffs waiting for you to explore. Diving is generally shallow with maximum depths around 60 feet.

Directions

From Kitamae Gate (Commissary side) on Camp Foster, turn right (northbound) onto Highway 58. Go north for ~4 km; you will pass Camp Lester on the right. You will see a SEGA arcade building on your left. Turn left at this stoplight (Hamagawa Road). Follow the road as it curves right. You will see the seawall on your left - multiple dive spots from pretty much any point along the seawall. You will see quite a few dive shops catering to the Japanese public and tourists along this section as well.

From Gate 2 on Kadena, turn left (southbound) onto Highway 58. Go north for ~4 km; shortly before reaching Camp Lester on your left, you will see a SEGA arcade building on your right. Turn right at this stoplight (Hamagawa Road). Follow the road as it curves right. You will see the seawall on your left - multiple dive spots from pretty much any point along the seawall. You will see quite a few dive shops catering to the Japanese public and tourists along this section as well.

I went scuba diving here on 7/22/2017. Average viz: 36-40ft/11-12m. Water temp: 81-85°F/27-29°C.
Low tide created limited visibility on and off reef but cleared as we moved away from. Reef. Found what locals call the bird cage, a water pipe discharge cage like cap encrusted with corals. An interesting find for a shallow dive. 37’

Nice relaxing dive. No gear issues. Obtained neutral buoyancy and maintained. No equipment issues. Nice, big, colorful coral but no special critters. Surfaced too far from entry and up on shallow reef with waves. Thought I was going to experience wave roll again but didn’t. LONG walk back to entry with gear.

My 2nd Okinawa dive. I will dive here many times before we leave the island. It has the most colorful coral I’ve seen in my 15 dives (Puerto Ricox5, Guamx4, Grand Caymanx1, St Thomasx2, Arubax1). Still experiencing surface anxiety but was fine once I got my head under water. Changed to AL-63cf tank with 17lb and still had difficulty achieving neutral buoyancy. Rented a backpack style BCD and like it better than my vest. Will need to consider making an investment if anxiety issues ever clear up and we start diving more frequently.

This was my first dive site we did during Open Water Cert. Very convenient especially if you live close by. Concrete steps that go right into the water. Steps get slippery at the bottom so watch your step and watch the surf. Snorkel out over about a hundred yards of reef then it drops off about 50 ft to a sandy bottom. Lots of trash down there! :(

3rd OW dive for training was pretty good liked the scenery should have spent more time down though.
