Morrison Springs - Ponce de Leon FL

Loading...
Morrison Springs is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located at 874 Morrison Springs Road, Ponce de Leon, FL 32455. This dive site has an average rating of 3.81 out of 5 from 75 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 81-90ft/25-27m. The average visibility is 71-80ft/22-24m. Training platforms are available.

Nice spring. Free to get in. There is are bathrooms, picnic tables and a scuba rinse station on site. The first cavern is about 40 - 50 feet deep. The larger cavern goes down to about 90 feet, but is very dark and can be difficult to get into because of the strong flow.

Morrison Springs is one of the most popular diving spots in northwest Florida and well-known throughout the southeast. This 161-acre park was acquired by the state in 2004 and has been leased to the county to maintain and preserve. The highlight of the park is a 250-foot diameter spring pool that produces and estimated 48 million gallons of crystal clear water each day and has been recorded to produce up to 70 million gallons a day. Three cavities allow Morrison’s frigid waters to surface from the underground aquifer. The deepest of these cavities, at approximately 300 foot in depth, eventually terminates in an underground chamber of unknown dimensions.

The new Morrison Springs Park includes large boardwalks overlooking the springs, a diving dock and a new boat ramp away from the diving location.

Plenty of activity around the spring. A large catfish and several large fresh water eels. The water was a couple feet higher than normal.

Diving there a few times due the week of Dec 13, 2019 to Dec 19, 2019. Most times the was quiet, only a couple divers. One warm day, lots of divers. Water temp about 67 degrees, vis about 50 feet in the basin, 10 feet in the river, and unlimited in the cavern. Some naughty divers or swimmers have placed a couple tables in the water, and almost into the vent for the cavern. Not sure why some people have to act like vandals. Otherwise a nice place to dive.

Morrison is one of the nicest local parks I’ve been to, nevermind the whole diving thing. Zero fish, but crystal clear water and a neat cavern that I think any OW certified diver would be totally comfortable exploring. I’ve been back a few times since this dive to try for another, but the river was backed up every time rendering the walkway to the dive platform flooded and the water a gorgeous shade of poop brown. Best to call ahead to check on conditions before driving out.

Fun dive, amazing clear water, excellent diver amenities. Not much to see and do on the bottom though, unless you’re cave certified and equipped with massive leg muscles to swim against the current.
