Aliwal Shoal - South Africa

Loading...
Aliwal Shoal is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in Umkomaas, Kwazulu-natal, South Africa. This dive site has an average rating of 4.00 out of 5 from 8 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 81-90ft/25-27m. The average visibility is 41-50ft/12-15m.

"Aliwal Shoal is made up of a long, wide reef with a varied and rugged topography. The rocky surface is cluttered with algae, sponges, soft and hard corals, anemones, and feather stars. Reef fish and pelagics are abundant, turtles are regulars, there are dolphins, whales, manta rays and other large creatures, and even the rare sighting of a sailfish or marlin. Then there are the sharks: raggies, hammerheads, whale sharks, and for some added excitement, blacktips, great whites, Zambezi (bull sharks) and tiger sharks, to name a few. Tiny pineapplefish, paperfish, nudibranchs and other small creatures add to the list. And if the visual overload is not sufficient, all of this is often accompanied by a enchanting underwater soundtrack provided by dolphin whistles and whale songs." Quoted from Dr Jenifer Goldberg’s book "ALIWAL SHOAL Dive Guide"

I worked for a couple of years in Umkomaas as a diving instructor. Aliwal Shoal is the most interesting and fascinating place.

I went scuba diving here on 5/24/2014. Average viz: 41-50ft/12-15m. Water temp: 71-75°F/22-24°C.
I was weighted with 6Kg (I’ve converted to 14lb). This was the perfect weighting. Vertical - feet down - descent, best buoyancy control. Definitely the best dive I’ve ever had.

We saw 12 different Ragged Toothed Shark, though I personally only saw 3 of them. Really an awesome time.I would recommend this dive site to anyone.

Very nice dive sites. When I was there some of the operators who offered shark experiences where chumming. I am not a fan of the chumming process.
