Maeda Point - Japan

Loading...
Maeda Point is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located at Cape Maeda, Onna-son, Okinawa, Japan. This dive site has an average rating of 3.96 out of 5 from 26 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 131-140ft/40-43m. The average visibility is 61-70ft/19-21m. This dive site provides bathrooms and airfills.

You haven’t dived on Okinawa until you’ve dived at Maeda Point. At the reef’s edge and to the right, the depth is about 20 feet; to the left of the reef, it’s about 100 feet. At Maeda Point, you can see chromis, eels, tube worms, anemone, clownfish, lionfish, schools of squid and an occasional turtle.

Get on Highway 58 heading North. After passing Kadena Air Base you travel approximently 15 km till you see the overhead sign directing you to Cape Zanpa (Route 6). After turning onto that road you will travel for about 15 minutes depending on traffic. When you get to the second split in the road veer to the right. (This turn is located about 1 km outside of Zanpa itself) Another ten minute trip and you will see the sign to Maeda Point overhead. Follow that road down and you arrive at the parking gate.

Alternatively, Follow 58 north, turn left at the Ryukyu Mura Sign. Follow the road until just after the Ryukyu Mura building, where you’ll turn left (theres usually a yellow sports car on the right side of this road) follw the road until you reach a stop sign, turn left and then right onto the road to Maeda. You’ll run right into the parking lot.

The fee to park is 100 yen per hour (less than a dollar depending on the yen rate). Suit up in the parking lot and head to the stairs which take you down the cliff to entry point.

I went scuba diving here on 7/21/2017. Average viz: 36-40ft/11-12m. Water temp: 81-85°F/27-29°C.
Clear waters off reef at beginning of dive but due to extremely high/low tides this year, water washed sediment from top reef once reef was exposed making vise limited in locations.

Diving here is excellent, but you have to look online the day of to make sure that it is open (Red flag= no diving). Only problem some people have is the long staircase going down to the dive spot and getting in and out of water due to rocks and climbing on the reefs if going into low tide. Beautiful marine life down there (clownfish, parrot fish, etc) Got down to about 120ft. Visibility is very good normally

My first dive on Okinawa and only my 14th dive since certification in 1997. Haven’t dove since bad ear infection during refresher course in Aruba in 2010 and was experiencing surface anxiety issues. Went with hubby dive buddy but also asked NAUI Dive Instructor SandgroperDiver to go with us. First time diving with 2mm full suit since PADI training and had buoyancy issues. Was having too many equipment issues to really enjoy the dive. 200 plus steps up the side of the mountain were no fun though. Will need to work on my stamina before attempting this dive site again.
