Lake Murray State Park - Three Rocks - OK

Loading...
Lake Murray State Park - Three Rocks is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located in OK. This dive site has an average rating of 4.00 out of 5 from 1 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 61-70ft/19-21m. The average visibility is 16-20ft/5-6m.

This spot on Lake Murray is called Three Rocks because of the distinctive three rocks that were probably placed there to keep people from driving in to the lake. It’s on the south side of the park. To find it first locate the paired concrete and steel beam towers that are easily visible from the 77S. From the towers travel east along 77S towards Marietta Landing Campground and look for a short asphalt drive way. There’s no neon sign to guide you so you have to drive well below the speed limit or you will miss it. At the end of that drive way there are three rocks. There is room for several cars to park there. It’s a bit rough but even low clearance cars can pass if they choose their path carefully. The area is primitive with no improvements of any kind. Underwater it’s fairly typical for a large lake. The terrain could be mud/silt, sloping rock, or mixed rocks from pebbled sized to boulders that could crush a house and everything in between. There aren’t any platforms, sunken boats, or cars or other junk placed in the near area for entertainment purposes. Just what was naturally there when they completed the lake plus some drink containers. Every species of marine life the lake has can be observed from there including various species of bass, perch, drum, buffalo carp, turtles, crawfish, etc. The path from the parking to the water isn’t too difficult. It has a few somewhat treacherous steps but most people could make it without too much trouble. There are no park serviced trash cans here so there’s usually some refuse others carelessly abandoned so it’s a good idea to bring your own trash bag. If you leave the bag at the street the park trash service will pick it up.

This is just one of many places on Lake Murray. I haven’t bother to document them but I’m going to try to do this in the future as I hopefully revisit my favorite places.

Everyone thinks Marietta Landing Campground is the only place to go on Murray. It’s not. Classes have to go there because there’s a platform there and they need it for the classes. But once you’re done with OW you never need a platform again.

I went scuba diving here on 8/3/2016. Average viz: 16-20ft/5-6m. Water temp: Over 85°F/29°C.
The viz was very good in the morning. It declined significantly in the afternoon but remained divable. Thermocline was 20-25ft. The water was nice and warm above the thermocline and freezing below it as expected this time of year. During both dives I observed every species that are present in the lake. A tire and some drink containers were removed from the lake during this visit.
