Garden Eel Cove (a.k.a Manta Heaven), Kailua-Kona, Honokohau Harbor, Hawaii
Description: Garden Eel Cove gets its name from a Sandy area just offshore of the reef where there is a colony of garden eels. These shy eels will quickly Retreat into their burrows. The Reef itself is home to a large variety of fish, crustaceans, and many more; some only found in the Hawaiian Islands. At night the site is better known as Manta Heaven, due to over 270 different manta rays visiting the reef for cleaning and to feed on plankton. Dive companies take advantage of this by placing lights out to concentrate these activities four divers at a place known as the "campfire". Rays regularly swim circles over divers and under snorkelers, making this site a must-see while on the big island of Hawaii. Depths range from 30-85 feet with the campfire at 35 feet and the eel colony at 55 feet.
