Last night my friend Kathy and I attended a skin event at Gene Juarez put on by Skin Authority. After an information session, accompanied by cheese and wine, we were treated to a glycolic acid peel and an infusion of antioxidants. We were then introduced to skin products that would help our individual issues. My issue? Spending 20 hours per week in the water, either chlorine or salt, with sun baking my face…well, that’s my issue. If you’ve read my article about skincare in XRay Magazine, you’ll ...
Interesting Lawsuit for divers Interesting Lawsuit for divers

A scuba diver abandoned off the coast of Newport Beach for four hours in 2004 can go forward with a $4-million lawsuit against the trip`s organizers, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge has ruled. Dan Carlock of Santa Monica was 46 when he signed up for the dive organized by Ocean Adventures Dive Co. aboard a boat operated by Sun Diver Charters LLC of Huntington Beach. About 12 miles off the coast, according to Carlock`s lawsuit, he got separated from his dive buddy and was left behind; th...

GirlDiver just became a Mares dealer and brought in all new equipment for our students to use. The most exciting piece of equipment for my wetsuit diving DM (our team is in drysuits...) was the Mares Isotherm Semi-dry. GirlDiver Leigh Ann was shocked at how warm it was and will never go back to a standard wetsuit. Mares new Isotherm semi-dry suit offers divers a second layer in critical areas under the suit, Trilastic under the arms and sides for better movement and a metal skin seal at feet, ar...

So, is it terrible of me to be elated that the latest in virutal reality games is such a flop? Even Nintendo can`t recreate what only a very few will ever get to see... One of the many reviews: Since video games first got their start, developers have realized that most things that are exciting in real life make for excellent games. Racing, playing professional sports, flying, even rocking out in front of an audience -- these are all things that have worked out great for franchises that have been...

I`ve been waiting for this!!! (text from scubadiverinfo.com) Olympus Stylus 1030 SW 10 megapixel, shockproof, freezeproof and waterproof to 33 feet (by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer) Right upfront, scuba divers will adore the new 10-megapixel Olympus Stylus 1030 SW. This new top-of-the-line model in Olympus` SW (Shock & Waterproof) series was introduced in January of 2008 as part of the company`s announcement of nine new consumer cameras. While sporting a new look that is somewhere inbetween the Styl...

If there are any of you out there who are avid scuba divers, then we`re sure you`re well acquainted with the dangers and difficulties that go along with such a hobby. Most difficult of all when exploring what lies beneath the waves is maintaining a line of communication. So UTC (Underwater Technology Center) has developed the Underwater Digital Device or UDI. The UDI is a wrist-wearable diving computer that not only keeps logs of your dive, but also allows you to communicate with other divers an...
Deeper, Faster, Farther crowd
GirlDiver - 12/23/2007 7:34 PM
Funny, I`ve always told my students about how the "deeper, faster, farther crowd" dives. Most of it was from experiences that I`ve had with this crowd in dive shops...but I don`t dive with these people, so nothing from real life to draw on. Today I took a charter (unknowingly) with this crowd. This particular group is well known in the area for not understanding that the water is bigger and heavier than they are...and it will kill them. The first dive was deep. They laughed...they joked...they d...
Fish & Flush Fish & Flush
GirlDiver - 12/18/2007 10:02 AM
Fish & flush? What will they think of next? Here`s an excerpt from the Star Gazette: I kid you not. The Fish `n Flush can be found on www.fishnflush.com. The Web page video shows a toilet being flushed while aquarium fish swim safely about a 2.2-gal. tank. The fish don`t get flushed; only the water in a smaller center tank swirls down the drain. That`s animal cruelty. It`s bad enough that the fish spends his life confined to a tiny space with a stupid plastic bubble-headed SCUBA diver. Now the f...

As an instructor, one of my favorite classes to teach is Open Water. Yes, it`s more work...more risk...and sometimes more frustration. But it`s also the class where I see the biggest change in my students. They go from land dwellers to undersea explorers, right before my eyes! Yesterday, one of my Advanced Students had been getting an airfill at a local scuba mega-chain, and had overheard a female diver say that she left her open water in tears when her instructor told her she asked too many que...
