DAN courses include more than just Oxygen. When most people think of Divers Alert Network two things come to mind. Dive Accident Insurance and Scuba Oxygen First Aid. My training partner Larry Zettwoch (z-man) was there in the very beginning. His Instructor Number is 25. Since that modest start in a small closet at Duke University DAN has grown into a research and training force in the Scuba industry. There are now 9 Dive Safety courses for Recreational Divers, 1 Dive Safety course for Professio...

Why do you as a Scuba Leader (Divemaster/DiveConn/Assistant Instructor/Instructor/Instructor Trainer) want to be a DAN Instructor? I mean come on, most of us do this for fun and we already spent scads of cash earning our Professional Diving Level Designation. Does it really matter? I only want to teach in my spare time! Is it really that hard to put an Oxygen Mask on someone? Is it any of my business if someone is bent and doesn’t want to see a doctor? Should I really do something to someone inj...
Instructor Liability Insurance
Kemperite - 6/10/2008 1:18 PM
So for most Instructors out there it’s time to renew your Diving Instructor Professional Liability Insurance policy (unless you are through Willis and paying your premiums for 12 months from time of initiation). Before you just go and pay the same company you have been paying because someone said they were the easiest one to go through why don’t you check around. I mean come on - most of you shop your auto insurance. Who hasn’t gone to geico.com or progressive.com were x minutes could save you h...

I recently became the owner of a new VR3 Dive Computer from Delta P. Mine was unlocked for Trimix Open Circuit Diving and was supposed to be able to get me out of the water much faster than my Dive Rite Nitek HE. I have loved my HE ever since I got it in 2004. It has been with me on many dives both deep and shallow. I have made use of its programmable 7 gas capabilities using as many as 5 different gases on a few dives over the years. To me my HE was everything I really needed – until I started ...
Fourth Element Dry Suit Underwear

I was diving Blue Stone Quarry in North Carolina a year ago. Wow, it’s been a whole year since the last time I was up there. I met Robert Outlaw and had some really good times with everyone at the quarry. I also did some diving with Sean Harrison – the Training Director at International Training (SDI/TDI/ERDI). Sean was sporting his dry suit on these dives. I just broke out my 5mm Henderson Hyperstretch for them. Anyway, Sean had some really nice looking dry suit underwear. Yeah, now I feel like...

http://www.aqua.org/ Today I spent a wonderful afternoon at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Talk about an incredible facility. I called the Director on Wednesday and informed him that I was in Baltimore and I had some free time on Saturday afternoon. I would love it if they could arrange a tour of their facility for me. 90 minutes later I received a return phone call telling me that one of their senior divers would be coming in special for me on Saturday at lunch to give me a tour of any are...

Some of you on here may know me. I`m the vagrant dive bum without a home who flies First Class. It`s kind of a running joke with my friends. I`m homeless - but I hate sitting in Cattle Class on the plane. So Saturday, the 2nd of February I was flying from a non-diving city in Florida to Atlanta, Georgia. I try to go up once a quarter to check my mail. I may be homeless but try doing business in this world with just an e-mail address. So I have a Post Office Box where I have to show up every so o...
Queen of Nassau Deep Wreck Key Largo Queen of Nassau Deep Wreck Key Largo
Kemperite - 4/06/2007 12:00 AM
Sorry gang, my underwater camera is only rated to 180 feet deep so no photos from this dive. However, you can check out photo and video from this site at: http://neptunoworld.com/wrecks/naufragio_qonassau.html The Queen of Nassau is an incredible wreck. Sitting at a maximum depth of 230 FSW it`s not for everyone. However, those with the training should surely make arrangements to see it when they visit Key Largo. We did the Queen with Dan Dawson at Horizon Divers. In the reconfigured Key Largo d...
Dive Medicine Training - Vol. 2 Dive Medicine Training - Vol. 2
Kemperite - 3/05/2007 12:00 AM
DAN Provider Training It`s really sad how many Instructors are taught during their IDC/IEC (depending on the agency) that they must be dynamic and maintain their technical edge in the industry but they overlook training. Many Instructors don`t promote continuing education in a way that is beneficial to YOU the diver. In 2004 I was in the top less than 1% of all PADI Instructors in North America for Continuing Education. How did I do it? I set out a minimum educational goal for people to go divin...

This will have a great deal of information geared both to the Provider and also a bit geared toward the Instructor. Divers Altert Network (DAN) is a Dive safety and research agency headquatered in North Carolina on the Duke University Campus. A great deal of research is conducted at Duke in conjunction with DAN`s mission. Follow along with the series and let me know if you have learned anything or think there are other points that could be helpful. Vol 1. - Dive Insurance / General Dive Health T...

I am one of a small number of IANTD Instructor Trainers in the world. Presenting the IANTD black card to another holder is like an invitation to look behind the wall sometimes. I just spent 3 weeks on the Southern coast of Spain and I had an absolute blast - foul weather be damned. I contacted the IANTD office in Spain and spoke directly with Armin, the licensee himself. I let him know who I was and that I intended to spend 3 weeks in his territory and that I`d like to get in some dives. Armin w...
