The NC/SC group will be at the Lake Norman Quarry for our get together. For those of you who are not in the Charlotte area, the quarry is a scuba only area open to members and guests, so you don’t have to worry about fishing boats and wave runners. We’ll get wet about 10am, serve lunch on site, dive the afternoon away and head up the street for dutch treat before people head out. Set your GPS for 347 Greenbay Road, Mooresville, NC 28117 and the Quarry entrance(gated) will be on the right just before you reach 347or on the left just after depending on the direction from which you are coming. $10 covers you for diving and lunch. If you need tanks and/or weights, let me know and I’ll see what I can work out with the local shops, should keep your total to $25 or less for two tanks, weights, & food.Let me know if you can come as we have a guest/member ratio we have to keep and I wouldn’t want you waiting on the other side of a locked gate while the key and I are chasing paddle fish.

Big Game Club Bimini

Looking at heading to Bimini this fall to dive local sites with Big Game Club. Here’s the topic, my local dive shop won’t be offering an instructor course anytime soon, there’s a shop about an hour away that will be. Those of you that have done it, help me think through the pro’s and con’s of a "nearly" local shop experience vs. spending a few weeks in a warmer location at one of these "GoPro" set ups. Thanks for the insights.

Starting the DM process......

Been a great year for Diving at the Smith home and I’m getting ready to start the Dive Master process and thought I would throw open the advice doors and see what wisdom was cast through them. At Lake Keowee there’s a nuclear station (don’t freak) that uses the water from the lake. Where it empties back into the lake the temps stay in the mid-upper sixties, lots of aquatic life to see and currents to drift dive. $40 covers your dive charter, snacks, 2 tank dive (tanks incl.) for a fun afternoon with divebuddies in the area. For those concerned about the nuclear plant, I’ve been told that you don’t glow long after the dive! If we get 14 divers the price drops to $30 each (14 is the max so let me know early). Lodging options are available in nearby towns if you need them, Clemson, SC has a number of options and is about 10 miles away. You’re on your own for lodging arrangements and can pay for the diving at the dock (cash please). Hope to see you there. Currently there are 9 spots still open. we’re using www.offthewalldiving.com for the charter and they’ve got some info on their web site about the dive site.

Anybody been to Fantasy Lake Scuba Park in NC?

Looking at a possible group dive gathering for a low cost and they seemed to fit the bill but cheaper is not always better so I thought I would ask.

Gear Suggestions for New Divers

So my wife and I tried a Snuba outing in the Keys this fall and were so taken by the experience that we followed it with a Discover Scuba class in Cozumel a short time later. I’m currently signed up for the Open Water Diver course through our LDS in Jan. We have some of the basics, masks, snorkels, fins, wetsuits, and skins. I’m curious about the suggestions for regulators, bcd’s, buy your own tank(or not), computers and so forth that would work for us new diver types.
